Why Every Parent Should Juice
By Djenaba Dioum Kelly
Three years ago my then four-year-old daughter announced one day that she did not like vegetables and was going to stop eating them. Period, hard stop. And, in a rare show of solidarity her three-year-old sister announced that she wasn’t going to eat vegetables either. Apparently, all the cool kids at daycare were defying the adults in their lives in this way.
I took it as a personal challenge. I was determined to get them nutrients so help me God!
I started by trying to trick them into eating vegetables. I would puree cauliflower and add it to the spaghetti sauce or put some tiny cubes of peeled zucchini to the chili. I also started making my own apple and orange juice. One day, I added some carrots. Nobody screamed. They gobbled it up. Gradually, I added cucumber, kale and beets. Kids were non the wiser. I won! And you can too.
There are three main reasons why every parent should start juicing immediately:
1. Straight, No Chaser – According to the website RebootWithJoe.com, “juicing removes the insoluble fiber from vegetables and fruits. While fiber is an established, important part of an overall healthy diet, removing the insoluble fiber allows for increased absorption of specific health promoting phytonutrients including enzymes, while the soluble fiber persists into the juice. “ This is a fancy way of saying all the good stuff goes right into your system. Also, you can get a full day’s worth of nutrients in one 8oz drink. Do you really want to sit and wait for your child to finish eating 4 cups of raw spinach? You can actually begin to feel the benefits in about ten minutes!
2. You Can THINK! – There are tomes written about all the great things that proper nutrients do to the brain. The bottom line is a well-nourished mind can focus better, remember better and flat out out-perform a not well-nourished one. End of story.
3. The Rock Star Effect – When you juice regularly, you simply feel great! Because your body is receiving the nutrients it needs on a consistent basis, it rewards you by operating at a high level. If you don’t believe me, try juicing once a day for one week. The stop for a few days and notice the difference in how you feel.
There you have it. Three great reasons to drop everything and start making delish juices for your family. There are thousands of recipes out there for great tasting, nutritious juices, but you can start with one of my favs:
6-8 leaves of Dinosaur Kale
1 cup spinach leaves
2 celery stalks
1 lemon (peeled)
Tip: You can add more apples or coconut water to sweeten.
Serve over ice & enjoy!
